In the case of Vishwajit’s antics, the first culprit is the journalist and I think the Marathi daily should suspend him immediately w/o pay for a week for creating such scenes.

Absolutely true this! Hopefully the issue won’t die down until I get to write a longer piece on it the coming weekend.

A comprehensive 'general public' friendly commuter system that is future ready is the need of the hour. Not off the shelf solutions. Could not agree more! This is fooling the public

Not just in Goa, but along the west coast from Mumbai to Trivandrum, we have chosen to become completely 'car-brained', and that affects more than just commuting. It's the infrastructure that supports this thinking that makes living here difficlut: just an unending urban sprawl without any otehr infrastructure, roads causing habitat fragmentation, affecting hydrology, air quality, and so on. The shift to public transport is probably what our communities- the benefits of social interactions across castes/religions/classes, care for the environment, etc etc.

Congratulations for the first birthday of your superb newsletter Gerard. Thank you very much for your insights and analyses.

I agree with you that with excellent public transport, the general public will become less reliant of either taxis or private transport (cost of gas or diesel, difficulties to find parking slots etc.). I have often wondered why Goa state does not introduce trams that are a very convenient and fast mode of travel. Panaji would be ideally suited for trams that could ply e.g. from Ribandar to Dona Paula along the Mandovi. An additional bonus would be that the route could be a tourist attraction such as Marine Drive in Mumbai. The authorities could also revive river travel as in Venice - as a kid, I often enjoyed travelling by "launch" from Aldona to Panaji - and with Goa's extensive waterways, it could not only offer a convenient mode of public transport but also easily compete with Venice.
